StreamScope

Where to start?

The internet is full of "perfect" streaming setups that cost $2,000. The reality: most successful streamers started with less than $200. What matters is consistency, personality and good audio โ€” not 4K resolution.

This guide covers three tiers: Budget (<$200), Mid-Range ($200โ€“$600), and Pro ($600+).

Microphone โ€” your most important investment

Bad audio drives viewers away faster than bad video. Invest here first.

TierRecommendationPriceWhy
BudgetHyperX QuadCast S~$100USB, plug & play, solid sound, no interface needed
Mid-RangeAudio-Technica AT2020~$99 + interfaceXLR, significantly better quality, needs Focusrite Scarlett Solo (~$70)
ProShure SM7B~$400Broadcast standard, robust, ideal for noisy environments

TipPosition your mic close to your mouth (6โ€“8 inches) and use OBS noise suppression. This makes cheap equipment sound expensive.

Camera

Budget
Logitech C920 (~$70)
1080p, reliable, widely available. The standard recommendation for years โ€” for good reason.
Mid-Range
Sony ZV-E10 (~$500)
Mirrorless camera usable as a webcam. Much better image quality, interchangeable lenses, great depth of field.
Alternative
iPhone/Android as webcam
With Continuity Camera (Mac) or DroidCam (Windows), use your smartphone as a high-quality webcam โ€” free.
Budget tip
Skip the facecam
Many of the most successful streamers don't show their face. Focus on content and audio first.

PC requirements for streaming

CPU
Minimum: Intel i5-10400 / AMD Ryzen 5 5600
For 1080p60 with software encoding (x264) you need at least 6 cores. With GPU encoding (NVENC/AMD VCE), less is sufficient.
GPU
NVIDIA RTX recommended
NVENC on RTX cards is hardware encoding โ€” massively reduces CPU load and delivers very good quality. AMD and Intel also have hardware encoders.
RAM
16 GB minimum, 32 GB recommended
Game + OBS + browser + chatbot + all other tools consume RAM fast. 16 GB is often barely enough, 32 GB gives you headroom.
Upload
At least 6 Mbit/s upload
1080p60 with good quality needs ~6,000 Kbit/s bitrate plus some headroom. Under 10 Mbit/s upload gets tight.

OBS settings for beginners

01
Choose your encoder
Go to Settings โ†’ Output โ†’ Encoder. Have an NVIDIA RTX? Choose NVENC H.264. AMD? AMF H.264. Otherwise: x264 with CPU preset "faster".
02
Set your bitrate
1080p60: 6,000 Kbit/s. 1080p30: 4,500 Kbit/s. 720p60: 4,500 Kbit/s. On Twitch, 6,000 is the recommended maximum for Partners.
03
Resolution & framerate
Base canvas: native monitor resolution. Output: 1920ร—1080 @ 60fps. If your PC struggles: 1280ร—720 @ 60fps is better than 1080p with frame drops.
04
Audio setup
Microphone: 48kHz, mono. Desktop audio: 48kHz, stereo. Add a noise suppression filter to your microphone (OBS has one built in).
